Tips on Journaling and Positioning

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

When I first began scrapbooking, it was all about adding funky borders to your photos and lots of stickers on the page. I love how the emphasis is now on the photos and the journaling and less on the decorative accents. Telling the story is such an important part of every page. However, it’s important to remember a few things when adding your journaling.

  1. I love to see a person’s own handwriting on a scrapbook page. What a priceless heirloom for generations to come. However, make sure your writing is legible so future generations will be able to read what you have written. Printing may be more legible than your cursive writing.
  2. Make sure your pen is archivally safe. I love all the varieties that American Crafts has to offer, particularly their Slick Writers.
  3. It’s okay to use a computer font once in a while instead of your own handwriting. Just make sure it’s a classic font like Helvetica or Times Roman and not too trendy.
  4. Make sure your journaling is “grounded” on your page. Writing never looks good just “floating.”  Write on a smaller piece of card stock, then add a coordinating card stock as a border. Or, using a ruler add lines on your page, then use those lines as a base for your journaling.
  5. Remember the written word is just as important as the photos. Really think out the details of the event rather than just writing the obvious.

When cutting out rub-ons, only cut the rub-on you need from the sheet leaving the rest of the sheet intact with the backing in place. This will keep the rub-ons from getting lost and from rubbing off intentionally. (more…)
